Methodology and Sources
The garage door replacement worksheet prices a stated scope, rather than guessing a complete quote for every home. It covers one or two existing home openings. A matching source row can price a door item or an installed bundle. Missing work stays unknown. It never turns into a zero charge.

Published guidance can change. Report a changed figure or scope through the contact page, with the source URL and the part that differs.
What the estimate covers
Each opening has a size, build, removal choice, opener choice and option scope. Opening site needs apply to the project. The worksheet assumes an existing home opening when a matching installed example is used. New framing, new wiring and custom work stay outside its numeric scope.
Installed width records describe a single or double door with construction unspecified. Selected dimensions identify that width class, not an exact-size quotation. Material records have size unspecified, so their results show exact-size fit as unconfirmed. Only one base is used per opening; material and size bands are not added together.
The focused single-width glass and insulated bands retain their own limits. Wind-rated bands retain the width class, but a price is not proof of assembly approval. Exact insulation fill, custom options and unsupported dimensions stay unpriced.
A source-based example is not an appointment offer. It does not confirm that a supplier serves the reader’s address. The site is a separate research resource. No maker or installer has supplied a personal quote through this worksheet.
Sources and scope
The source table lists the numeric ranges and national context used by the worksheet. Each range retains its scope, currency and quantity basis. Clopay's guide does not state a publication date.
HomeGuide's installation guide, dated July 10, 2025, provides width-class and material guidance. Its separate glass, insulation and hurricane-door guides add narrower scoped records. Angi, dated September 21, 2026, and Fixr, dated January 31, 2025, give independent national project context. Those context bands are not additive calculator terms.
Clopay gives solid 8 x 7 ft door-only allowances for uninsulated and insulated construction. Material or insulation fill is unspecified in those rows. Installation and hardware remain unknown. An open-ended wood or steel figure is not converted to a bounded ceiling. Conflicting aluminum summaries are excluded.
We do not average unlike publisher samples or infer local prices from national bands. No regional multiplier, guessed inflation or area-scaling factor is used.
How the range is calculated
Select one mutually exclusive base per opening. If it is an installed bundle, keep its included items inside that base. Add only separate items. If it is supply-only, needed installation remains unpriced until a matching labor record exists. Supply branches are partial for that reason.
The lower subtotal is the sum of selected item lows. The upper subtotal is the sum of selected item highs. Add the original values first, then round the low down and the high up to whole US dollars. The source figures are not probability percentiles. The displayed interval does not promise that a certain share of jobs falls inside it.
For a single-width installed base with a belt opener, the lower arithmetic is 700 + 200 + 150 = 1,050. The upper arithmetic is 2,700 + 450 + 400 = 3,550. Door fitting belongs to the base. Opener unit and labor are separate non-overlapping rows. The priced subtotal is $1,050 to $3,550, before removal and other unknown charges.
The general installed opener row is context only. It is never added to the unit-plus-labor rows. Wall-mount work has no matched bounded installed record and stays unpriced. Keeping an opener does not confirm fit or establish that later paid work will cost nothing.
For two matching openings, repeat each per-unit row once. There is no assumed paired-door discount or regional adjustment. A separately published combined-job offer would need a different source row. The worksheet does not invent a service-call minimum or assign one to each item.
Optional budget edits
The result updates as you choose your project scope. Optional budget fields start with each selected national range and update the subtotal as you edit. Both amounts are required; the lower must be nonnegative and the upper at least as high. Invalid edits preserve the last valid result. Adjusted amounts are labeled as your inputs, while the source list retains the original published range. Edits cannot fill an unknown work item or revive an expired source. Restore returns those fields to their published ranges. Changing the project choices starts a new sourced result. Your choices and valid budget edits are saved on this device when browser storage is available. Reset clears that saved worksheet. No entries leave your browser through this worksheet.
The print view keeps the selected scope, result and sources used. Any applied edits appear as your amounts. It omits the long form and article so you can compare the worksheet with a written offer. The method URL provides the source ranges and their limits.
Included items and limits
An inclusion applies only to the named source scope. The calculator does not assume every installer includes the same parts. It repeats inclusions beside the result so the reader can compare a written offer on similar terms.
Removal inclusion is unresolved for the guide bases. A required or unsure removal choice therefore stays on the unknown list. We do not add a general allowance to a package that could already cover it, and no-removal selections do not create an invented deduction. Check the final written scope for removal and disposal.
Tax, permits, shipping and site work are unknown unless expressly included in a row. They stay beside the result as limits. Keeping an existing opener also requires a safe fit check; the worksheet does not price a later repair or confirm safe operation. A wall-mount opener allowance is not proof of installation suitability.
Unknown and expired data
Custom dimensions, unsupported build and unpriced upgrades preserve the selected inputs. The result either lists priced items as a subtotal or shows an unpriced project. It does not describe a subtotal as a complete installed quote.
Unknown opening conditions make the project partial. A matching door price cannot resolve a framing or electrical problem. The missing item remains on the checklist. This is separate from the ordinary unknown tax and permit charges shown on every result.
The browser compares the current date with each selected row’s expiry. After expiry, it withholds that numeric item and reports the source gap. Text, tables and the source links remain readable for review. A source recheck must update the observation record before the affected number is available again.
Corrections
If a published range or inclusion changes, report the exact source and scope. Unsupported amounts are withheld from calculation until the source has been reviewed. Your saved budget edits do not change the published reference ranges.
Return to the replacement calculator to select a scope. Use the brand comparison to research listed door choices. Neither route replaces a written price and installation scope for the measured opening.
