Garage Door Installation Cost
HomeGuide gives $700 to $2,700 for a single-width installed door and $1,000 to $3,500 for a double-width door. Its general labor guidance is $200 to $500 when priced on its own. Never add that labor again to an installed base. Removal, the opener and building changes need their own inclusion check.

Garage door installation cost can mean fitting labor alone or a full door-and-fitting package. Check which one a price shows before adding anything. A replacement in a prepared opening differs from making a new opening. The useful budget keeps the door and hardware, plus fitting scope together, with extra work visible.

HomeGuide's installation guide provides the national planning ranges below. All amounts are in US dollars, with installed packages kept separate from labor-only prices.
Garage door installation cost: included-scope table
| Published line | National range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Single-width door installed | $700 to $2,700 | Door and fitting. Exact package still needed |
| Double-width door installed | $1,000 to $3,500 | Door and fitting. Exact package still needed |
| Separate fitting labor | $200 to $500 | Labor scope only, not added to an installed band |
| Distinct old-door removal | $50 to $250 | Check it's excluded from the real package first |
| General new opener installed | $300 to $900 | Distinct device and fitting scope |
Other national guides cover distinct samples. Angi, dated September 21, 2026, gives a replacement band of $754 to $1,707. Fixr, dated January 31, 2025, gives $700 to $2,000 installed. We don't average these into a new price or treat one as the ceiling for every model.
Replacement versus a new opening
A same-opening replacement starts with the existing finished width and height. It still needs suitable hardware and correct fit. New framing, new wiring or a larger opening adds building scope that isn't defined by the normal door band.
Record the measured opening and offered clearances. Note obstructions without moving a loaded track or support. A planning measure helps show the job, but the chosen system's final fit must be shown before ordering. Don't assume a common door size accepts every spring and opener arrangement.
Door supply and hardware
Supply-only offers can exclude much of the work. The Clopay price guide labels its standard solid-door table as door only. Fitting and hardware can add cost. A supply allowance isn't a full replacement price.
Specify the model and build before comparing amounts. Insulation and glass, plus finish options can vary within one door family. Keep the exact choice on the offer. Don't add a general material range to a size range: both show a door, so that would count the base twice.
DASMA safety tips explain that track and sections work as a system. Check which hardware is included for the chosen replacement. An old track isn't by itself a suitable way to reduce the cost. Springs and loaded brackets belong to trained door-system work.
Removal and delivery, plus cleanup
Ask whether removal covers taking down the old system and hauling it away. A cleanup promise can mean removing new packaging rather than disposing of the old door. Put both on the written scope. Keep delivery restrictions and any extra access charge distinct.
The calculator leaves needed removal unknown where the broad installed base doesn't prove inclusion. It doesn't add a generic removal fee that might already belong in a package. Check the real offer first. Then add only excluded work.
Opener work and site extras
A kept opener still needs safe fit with the new assembly. Check the connection and protection. A new opener is a distinct device, and a bare unit price doesn't cover fitting. If the door package covers one, don't add another installed allowance.
Permits and tax, plus electrical changes remain distinct unless stated otherwise. No ZIP multiplier or inflation factor completes this budget. A national source can show a broad allowance, but it can't inspect your framing or price a custom circuit.
Compare retailer and direct fitting offers
Use the Home Depot cost guide to distinguish its published service guidance from store supply listings. The Lowe's guide explains its custom fitting route and scope questions. Neither comparison claims a fixed retailer price for every home.
Compare the same model and included work across routes. A retailer package and a direct installer offer can have distinct handling or warranty terms. Ask who handles a later fitting issue. Product warranty and labor coverage aren't the same thing.
Read the fitting timeline to separate order lead time from fitting time. The replacement ROI reference explains why published resale estimates don't reduce the amount you must pay for the job.
Build a written comparison sheet
List the real door and size first. Add chosen glass and finish, plus insulation. Mark each fitted item as included, priced separately or unknown. Then check removal and the opener. An unknown amount isn't zero and should not make an incomplete offer appear cheaper.
Use the replacement calculator for one source-backed base per opening. Keep the method beside the estimate when adding distinct items. The final written scope should explain the differences between that broad guide range and your chosen project.
FAQ
Is fitting labor already in the door range?
It's in the installed bands shown here. A supply-only price is distinct. Read the source and the written offer before adding labor. If the base already covers fitting, another general labor allowance would double-count it. Where the offer doesn't name included work, keep that question unknown rather than guessing.
Does a replacement need new framing?
Not every same-opening replacement does, but this guide can't inspect the building. Record any known damage or proposed size change and obtain a distinct work scope. Don't treat normal door fitting as including structural alterations. A prepared-opening choice in the calculator is an assumption for budgeting, not a verified building condition.
Garage door installation cost Verdict
Compare garage door installation cost using the exact door and included work. Keep labor-only and installed bands distinct. Count each fitted item once. Then resolve removal and site extras. Clear package details matter more than a broad price that leaves the rest of the project undefined.
