Single Car Garage Door Cost

Measuring tools and a planning sketch on a desk

HomeGuide gives $700 to $2,700 for a single-width door with fitting. Clopay lists $750 to $1,500 for a solid uninsulated 8 x 7 ft door alone, or $900 to $2,000 insulated. Those scopes differ. Use the installed band as broad guidance and the supply bands only with fitting and hardware still unpriced.

Single car garage door cost starts with one measured opening and a defined door build. A narrow opening can use several materials and options, so one-car capacity is not an exact product spec. Compare the door and fitting, plus removal together. Keep the opener and any opening changes on distinct lines.

HomeGuide's installation guidance and Clopay's price guide describe different cost scopes. The amounts below are in US dollars, with supply-only and installed prices kept separate.

Single car garage door cost: supply versus installed

Published scope Range Important limit
Single-width door with fitting $700 to $2,700 HomeGuide broad national class; exact model unspecified
Solid 8 x 7 ft uninsulated door only $750 to $1,500 Clopay supply guidance; fitting and hardware extra
Solid 8 x 7 ft insulated door only $900 to $2,000 Clopay supply guidance; insulation fill unspecified

An installed range can overlap a maker's door-only range because they show distinct selections and samples. That is not proof that labor is free or that the door-only guide is wrong. Do not subtract unrelated bands to derive fitting cost.

A real supply offer can be compared with an installed offer only after adding its own missing work. Keep hardware and delivery, plus fitting tied to that chosen door. If those amounts are unknown, the supply subtotal stays partial rather than receiving a guessed allowance.

Measure the opening before choosing the band

Clopay's planning guide names common single doors as 8 or 9 ft wide by 7 ft high. Other sizes depend on the chosen model. Use the standard-size reference to keep finished-opening measurements distinct from garage floor space.

Check offered headroom and side room. Note space for the door's travel and the opener system. A common width and height do not prove that a normal track arrangement will fit. If space is constrained, the fitting scope needs the correct system rather than an improvised clearance change.

Do not operate an unstable door to obtain measurements. Stay clear of loaded hardware. Final ordering measurements can be shown as part of the fitting work. A notebook estimate is useful planning details, but it does not replace the real fit check before purchase.

Select a build, not just a material name

Clopay Classic Steel shows how a single family can cover several steel builds. An open-backed uninsulated door differs from an insulated backed assembly. Record the chosen model and backing, plus insulation. The same outside panel pattern may appear in distinct builds.

Natural wood, wood-look steel and a composite overlay are also distinct selections. Keep the surface and core on the offer. A finish called wood grain does not show that the door is natural wood. If the real material matters to you, make that rule explicit.

For a glass door, use a glass-exact guide rather than assuming the normal single-width high end applies. For a rated assembly, define the pressure and impact evidence on its own. A national price class cannot show a needed assembly approval.

Insulation and window options

The maker supply table labels a solid door. Windows are a distinct choice and can alter the scope. Keep the exact glazing and layout with the model. Do not assume a photograph of a collection promises that option for every measure or rating.

Insulation also needs a build label. The broad single insulated guide does not choose polystyrene or polyurethane for you. If an offer has a thermal number, name whether it is a section R-value or a whole-door U-factor. DASMA TDS 163 explains that those garage-door measures have distinct bases.

This budget gives no fixed energy saving or payback. The rest of the garage and its use matter too. Choose an insulated assembly for its listed qualities, then compare the full price. Do not subtract an assumed future utility saving to make its installed amount appear lower.

Fitting and hardware, plus old-door removal

An installed offer should name the chosen door and suitable system. Record tracks and spring hardware, then seals and the opener connection. DASMA safety tips explain why track and sections must work together. Equal width does not show that an old track suits the new door.

Check whether the installer covers removal and disposal. A supply-only purchase normally cannot settle that question. A national installed band may not state enough detail either. Where inclusion is unclear, keep it as missing scope rather than adding a generic charge that may overlap the package.

Do not loosen bottom brackets or spring hardware to reduce the job price. They can be loaded even when the door is closed. This guide gives no removal, cable-repair or tensioning procedure. If the door is off track or visibly unstable, keep people clear until the safe work scope is shown.

Keep or replace the opener

The existing opener may be kept as a planning choice, subject to safe fit. Its presence does not show that it can work with a distinct door assembly. Have the connection and safety protection checked under the real fitting scope. Any paid repair remains distinct unless included in the offer.

HomeGuide's opener guide, dated July 10, 2025, gives a broad $300 to $900 installed opener band. That covers an opener scope, not the whole garage door. Use it only when a distinct new opener belongs in the project and is excluded from the door package.

If the package covers both door and opener, adding another installed opener band would double-count the device and fitting. Ask for enough scope detail to name what is already covered. A bare motor price is also distinct from a full installed replacement opener.

Three single-opening planning scenarios

For a prepared opening with a broad single-width installed base, start with $700 to $2,700. Keep removal and unspecified extras visible. The allowance does not choose a model or certify the measured opening. It is a starting scope for a written comparison.

For a solid uninsulated 8 x 7 ft supply purchase, the Clopay band is $750 to $1,500. Fitting and hardware remain unpriced. Do not add an installed whole-door band to complete it; that would buy the door twice. Use the real fitting offer for that chosen item.

For a new opener added on its own, list its installed amount once. If you use unit and labor lines instead, keep them non-overlapping and do not add the full installed band too. The calculator method explains that arithmetic rule.

For a custom opening or a change to framing, the building work stays unpriced. A one-car garage label gives no basis for a carpentry coefficient. Obtain the real work description and cost before treating the door subtotal as a full project budget.

Written-offer checklist

Line What to record
Door Real model and finished width by height
Build Material, layers and insulation, plus backing
Look Finish and chosen glass layout
Fitting New system and seals, plus opener connection
Removal Old-door taking apart and disposal inclusion
Extra work Opening changes and wiring, plus permit duty
Money terms Tax and delivery, plus payment schedule

Reserve included for items named inside a package. Reserve zero for a checked no-charge item or work that is not needed. Use unknown when an offer does not resolve the price. This prevents an incomplete scope from appearing cheaper than another supplier's full offer.

Read product and labor warranty terms separately. Ask who handles an operating fault after fitting and what the stated coverage covers. A warranty duration is not a lifespan estimate. It also does not prove that every later service call is included in the purchase price.

Use the replacement calculator to keep a source-backed single-opening budget with the unknown list visible. If the garage has two distinct openings, compare two-car replacement scope rather than applying a double-door category to each narrow door.

FAQ

Does a one-car door always mean 8 x 7 ft?

No. It is a layout description, not an exact measure. Clopay names 8 and 9 ft widths with a common 7 ft height, and other choices depend on the model. Measure the finished opening and clearances. Do not order solely from the garage's car capacity or a general description of the old door.

Why is a door-only price sometimes above an installed guide?

The scopes and chosen products can differ. A maker's supply guide may show a distinct build from a broad national installed sample. That overlap does not show a negative fitting cost. Compare the real door and missing work on the same basis instead of subtracting unrelated guide ranges from one another.

Can I reuse the old opener to keep the total down?

You can record retention as a planning choice, but safe fit still needs check. The new door may have distinct hardware or travel needs. Cover that check in the fitting scope and keep any paid repair visible. An existing opener is not evidence that the completed replacement project has no opener-related cost.

Single car garage door cost Verdict

Compare single car garage door cost using one measured opening and one specified build. Keep supply allowances distinct from installed guidance. Name removal and opener work, then resolve the extras. A full written scope is the useful comparison; a broad one-car label cannot price the real door on its own.
